Introduction

The Geological Society of China (GSC), founded in Beijing on February 3rd, 1922, is one of the earliest academic groups establish in China, and an academic science and technology association composed of scientific workers in the geological prospecting industry, with more than 90,000 members. As a 4A social organization and a member of the International Union of Geological Sciences, the GSC is administrated by China Association for Science and Technology, and affiliated to Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China. The office is located in the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.

Over the past more than 100 years since its foundation, the Geological Society of China has been dedicated to building a high-level academic exchange platform to promote and serve geological science and technology innovation, a transparent, fair and impartial platform for talent cultivation and recommendation, a geological science popularization system that improves the national scientific quality, a platform for international exchanges and cooperation with international influence, a stage for the inheritance and promotion of geological culture in the new era, and a high-caliber scientific think tank, to actively undertake the transferred government functions and improve its social service capabilities.

Emblem

The Chinese character ‘中’ represents the Geological Society of China, ‘土’ and ‘石’ represent the geological qualities, and ‘山’ and ‘水’ represent the internal and external forces of the earth such as orogenic movements, volcanic activities, transgression and regression, and other hydrodynamic phenomena. They also represent the characteristics of the four major geological periods in China. The character ‘石’ for the Paleozoic stratigraphy, ‘水’ for the Paleozoic marine sedimentation, ‘山’ for the Mesozoic orogenic movement, and ‘土’ is the main deposition of the Cenozoic. The four characters reflect the geographical characteristics of China, the west side of the mountains, the east side of the ocean, the south side of the hills and rocky mountains, the north to the loess accumulation is dominated. ‘Stone in the soil’, “soil in the stone”, “water in the mountain”, “mountain in the water” describes a number of basic philosophy of geology.

Note: The emblem was designed by Zhang Hongzhao, Xie Jiarong, Yang Zhongjian, and Amadeus William Grabau, with seal script by Zhang Hairuo, and was adopted at the 13th Annual Conference in 1937.
